Hi

I’ve come across a tool to add to sites I do that translates everything free (http://www.appliedlanguage.com/trans/free_quick.aspx), only downside is a link back to the providing site – that I can see of anyway?? Anybody used it or know how good it is??

Does anybody have any idea about this translation tool??

No experience of using the tool but ... it will depend on what it is you want to translate, what language(s) and the community / audience it's directed at. Literal translations of text don't always make sense. So for example if you're attempting to translate legal information an automated tool may well have severe limitations.

If you know any speakers of other languages, the easiest thing might be to see how well the online translation tool copes with translating a paragraph of typical text, and a page of your website before implementing it on your site.

In the absence of anyone with direct experience of using the tool, having someone who understands the language in question is probably your best bet.

As a quick experiment, we used the tool to translate a page on our site into Italian and Spanish. Verdict on Italian (from someone who speaks a little Italian) wasn't great. Will run it past a fluent Spanish speaker I know when they're next around and post the result back here if that helps.

I checked with Aba using the Free website translation to translate English into Spanish one of our ICT documents and it seem to cope in an average way even though it did do literal translation which is difficult with text that has a lot of technical concepts and phrases. I would use it only as a draft document just to get the gist of the document.

Not bad for free translation.
