There are some great social media / social networking tools out there (such as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Linkedin etc.) which some charities and non profit organisations have used effectively. For organisations thinking about exploiting these tools there are 10 great tips on what to do before setting up social media here: http://notesfornonprofits.blogspot.com/2009/03/top-ten-things-nonprofit-should-do.html.
Various knowledgebase articles including http://www.ictknowledgebase.org.uk/socialnetworking and http://www.ictknowledgebase.org.uk/socialnetworkingneeds also provide some pointers.

Got or know of a social media success story? Please let us know.

Published yesterday, Lord Carter's Digital Britain report gives more details about how the government aims to provide universal access to a minimum 2Mbps broadband connection and tackle online piracy. You can Download the summary at http://tinyurl.com/lcsorq or the full report at http://tinyurl.com/lbgw7r.

Is a 2Mbps minimum too low? With more and more services being delivered on the internet shouldn't we be aiming higher? Is taxing all landline users 50p a month the way to go to raise the cash to do this? And can we ever beat illegal video downloading and music sharing?

One method to consider would be utilizing Jump drives, for a very meager cost, you can quiet easily purchase an external USB internal HD mount and mount a SATA HD drive externally. DVD is as you point out an unreliable medium if it gets scratched, but the same could be said of paper tape if you leave the tapes on top of a set of speakers or near a magnet, in which event, your backup's are as good as gone.

Whilst they say tape is outdated it still serves its purpose and is still widely available, HP StorageWorks DAT 72 Tape Drive's provide a balance of price and performance with up to 72 GB of compressed data on a single cartridge at speeds of up to 23 GB/hr. The only downside is the price of the drive and the tapes.

Whereas in contrast an External Internal USB HD mount is on sale in Maplins electronics for around £25 and the HD's can be picked up cheaply for around £18 for 80Gb.

Hi, Andrew, I'm new too, I spent more years than I care to think about pursuing certification in information technology with the promise of it changing my career prospects, only to find at the end of it all I still ended up working for recruitment agencies doing menial labor work.

The current scheme operated by the local authority is getting people to go on a learn direct course for what they term as an ECDL. European Computer Driving Licence. This is on offer from Learn Direct. However when I went along to take advantage of the scheme the most they offer is a Basic Level2 a far cry from some of the more advanced and in depth courses I have already taken.

It was really quite funny sitting down to take the ECDL to find it was mostly via a Adobe Flash interface that prompted me with the following kind of Questions, "If I have six oranges and seven lemons and remove one orange and two lemons how meny would be left?" -How that helps people get a head start in I.T or ICT is truly beyond me.

Needless to say I finished the whole course in less time than it takes to peel an orange and when prompted to go back for additional study I passed up on that opportunity with no regrets.

If you have any technical questions or requests, feel free to ask, I will endeavor to provide a better solution than that! ;-)

TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) is the basic communication language or protocol of the Internet. It can also be used as a communications protocol in a private network (either an intranet or an extranet). When Web Design is set up with direct access to the Internet, your computer is provided with a copy of the TCP/IP program just as every other computer that you may send messages to or get information from also has a copy of TCP/IP.

TCP/IP is a two-layer program. The higher layer, Transmission Control Protocol, manages the assembling of a message or file into smaller packets that are transmitted over the Internet and received by a TCP layer that reassembles the packets into the original message. The lower layer, Internet Protocol, handles the address part of each packet so that it gets to the right destination. Each gateway computer on the network checks this address to see where to forward the message. Even though some packets from the same message are routed differently than others, they'll be reassembled at the destination.

TCP/IP uses the client/server model of communication in which a computer user (a client) requests and is provided a service (such as sending a Web page) by another computer (a server) in the network. TCP/IP communication is primarily point-to-point, meaning each communication is from one point (or host computer) in the network to another point or host computer. TCP/IP and the higher-level applications that use it are collectively said to be "stateless" because each client request is considered a new request unrelated to any previous one (unlike ordinary phone conversations that require a dedicated connection for the call duration). Being stateless frees network paths so that everyone can use them continuously. (Note that the TCP layer itself is not stateless as far as any one message is concerned. Its connection remains in place until all packets in a message have been received.)

Many Internet users are familiar with the even higher layer application protocols that use TCP/IP to get to the Internet. These include the World Wide Web's Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), the File Transfer Protocol (FTP), Telnet (Telnet) which lets you logon to remote computers, and the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP). These and other protocols are often packaged together with TCP/IP as a "suite."

Sorry not aware of any classroom based training on moderation but there are lots of resources out there to help. Including: http://www.ictknowledgebase.org.uk/onlinecommunities and http://www.ictknowledgebase.org.uk/messageboards.
Also it's worth checking around if there are any web based seminars ("webinars"). NTEN http://www.nten.org run them from time to time.
Notice there is a webinar here: http://www.mzinga.com/en/AboutUs/Events/Archive/ called "Best Practices for Moderating Your Online Community". Looks like it's free to download and listen to but you need to register (also free).

Another option is to visit / talk to people who are successfully running online networks.

Also worth taking a look at http://www.ictknowledgebase.org.uk/libel and http://www.ictknowledgebase.org.uk/websitedisclaimers for information on some of the legal aspects.

Hi everyone

I run a very small personal development support website. It has been up now for a while.

I run the back end of it more or less on my own. I not a programmer but do have good graphic and photo editing skills. Perhaps there is someone who would like to trade skills as I could do with some help improving the forum.

The forum address is:
