RAID
Redundant Array of Independent Disks
A system used usually on servers to protect data from disc failure. There are various levels of RAID, the most commonly used of which are 1 and 5. Level 1 uses two hard drives which are mirrored so that the same data is written to each of the disks; RAID 5 uses a minimum of three identical drives and data is striped across two of them with the third disk storing information from both the other disks, and which can then be used to restore data should one of the other disks fail. In both RAID 1 and RAID 5, one disk can fail without any data loss occurring.
